Born in 1860 in England, immigrated to Canada in 1873, immigrated to U.S. in 1892. Farmed land in Meckling, South Dakota to 1902 when moved family to Lake County, Illinois as part of John Alexander Dowie's Utopian experiment city of Zion. Following Dowie's death in 1907 and the take-over of Zion by Glenn Wilber Voliva, James joined and became an elder of the rival Christian Assemblies church until his death in 1937.

He fathered with his first wife, Margaret Hollingsworth, nine children. He married Esther M. Beebe in 1917, following the death of Margaret. Both wives are buried at the same cemetery, along with his daughter Beatrice who lays beside James and her mother Margaret.
