Mrs. Mary Smith was born in Union County, Iowa, February 8, 1866, and passed on from this life while in Edwards County hospital, Saturday, September 26, 1959, at the age of 95 years, 7 months and 18 days. Mary was the youngest of nine children born to Isaac and Martha Benedict, a strict Quaker family of the original William Penn Quakers. Thus was Mary raised. Growing to young womanhood in her home community, she was united in marriage to William Hooker Smith, December 1, 1887, in Murray, Iowa. To this union, six children were born to bless their home.
The pioneer spirit of the family answered the call of the west and taking to their covered wagon, they traveled some 3,000 miles in the 1890's looking for a home site for the family. From Iowa they traveled to Nebraska, then to Kansas into this section of the country, then to South Dakota, to Colorado, New Mexico and back to this central, western plains country of Kansas to make their home.
Mrs. Smith took her public stand for Christ and united with the Methodist Church, Sylvia, Kansas, in 1908. The last three and one-half years of her life on this earth was spent in failing health, but she was never one to complain.
Left in this world to be inspired by her long life as a pioneer mother are two daughters: Lettie Jamison and Myrtle Ostrander; two sons, Seley A. and Sidney B. Smith, all of Kinsley. Also, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were: Ted Stramel, Asa Smith, Herb Brown, Jimmy George, Cliff Kirkbride and Clint Beck.
Mrs. Charles Kingry and Mrs. Jack Smith sang at the funeral service.
Mrs. Mary Smith was buried in the Garfield Cemetery at the side of her husband.
