August C. Karl Hollatz was born in a small German village called Hasenfier and was probably baptized as a baby at the Evangelical (Lutheran) Church there. His family also lived in Plietnitz and GrossBorn. All three villages were within a few miles of each other and were in the same Pomeranian district known as Neustettin (This area today is in northern Poland.

On April 12, 1884 the rest of August's family arrived in the United States and came to Joliet, probably by the 14th. On the next day, April 15, 1884, August and Augusta Strauss were married at Joliet by Rev. August Schuessler, pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. They were both 22 years old.

On July 6 of the same year twin boys were born and named Otto and Oskar About 3 1/2 months later, on October 23, 1892, Oskar died. The Hollatzes seventh child and only daughter was born about two years later. Her name was Elsa but was called "Elsie".
The Hollatzes were members of St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Garner. Each of their children were confirmed there at the age of 13 or 14.
After 29 years of farming, August and Augusta retired in 1921 and moved to a home in Ventura, Iowa. They lived here for 20 years. August enjoyed fishing and also helped on his childern's farms after he retired. On May 21, 1941 Augusta died at home after being in poor health her last years. She was 80 years old. After funeral services at St. John's Lutheran Church, she was buried at St John's Cemetery, rural Garner.
August lived for seven years afters his wife's death. When his health began to fail in 1948 he moved to Mason City and livd with his daughter Elsie Park until he died on December 13, 1948. He was 87 years old. Funeral services were held at St. John's and he was also buried at St. John's Cemetery.
