Upon arriving in Vietnam, William was assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
The battalion was participating in Operation Union with Echo Company operating northeast of Que Son, when the Marines were engaged by hostile forces. William died as a result of a gunshot wound to the body from hostile rifle fire.
