Jacob enlisted in Stewart's Company of the 4th Alabama Infantry Battalion. Members of this unit were merged into the 55th Alabama Infantry in February of 1863. His widow, Sarah J. Ellenburg filed a benefits claim in Center, Alabama on August 17,1863. The ADAH lists his name as Ellenburg. He appears on a roster of the 55th as Ellingburg. He is buried in the section of Maple Hill Cemetery containing unknown soldiers. The marker on this memorial was placed by the Egbert Jones Chapter of the SCV after tireless research revealed the names of some of the men that were buried there. Jacob's name on the record of burial was most likely misspelled or misread.
