> U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, in 1931, from the law department of the same university in 1932, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Fargo, North Dakota. In 1959, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-sixth Congress, serving until his resignation in 1960. He was then elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William Langer in 1960 and served until his death from heart failure at age 84.
