He lived in Pittsburgh where he was a bookkeeper. His first wife was Mary Jane Hastings with whom he had four children, Theodore F Mustin (1845-1853), Charles Tage Mustin (1847-1934), James G Mustin, Jr. (1849-1931) and Mary J Mustin (1852-1870). His second wife was Frances Mason Irwin who gave birth to four children, one posthumously. He took sick in 1864 and returned to Philadelphia with brother Robert Mustin to recuperate but died at his parent's home on Brown St.
