William "Bud" Emel was born to William and Edith Emel in Seabeck, Washington, a small waterfront community. The Emel House is a historic site at Scenic Beach State Park in Seabeck, and was used as both a second home and a permanent home for the Emel family.

In the 1910 census William is the younger brother of Edith; his dad was a logger. By 1920 he has a younger brother, Russell. In 1930 he was a jailer at the Kitsap County Jail.

He died in Douglas County, Oregon, and the record states his wife's name is Helen.

Bud is buried in Hope Section next to a flowering cherry tree at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Bremerton, Kitsap County, Washington. The inscription reads "Beloved Husband and Father."
