US Senator. He was born near Wheeling, Virginia. His family moved to Illinois where he was employed as a store clerk while studying law. He was admitted to the bar in 1834 and established his practice in Springfield. He served one term in Illinois' House of Representatives before moving to Wisconsin in 1841. He was a member of the territorial legislature from 1847 until Wisconsin became a state. He served in the United States Senate from June 8 1848 until March 3, 1855. During his tenure, he was the chairman of the Committee to Audit and Control the Contingent Expenses and served on the Committees for Revolutionary Claims; Agriculture; and Indian Affairs. An unsuccessful farmer in Waukesha County, he resumed his law practice in Milwaukee until his death.
