DEATH TAKES DEAN OF THE COUNTY BAR
Attorney Jesse M. Hatch Succumbs to Illness This Morning
---The community was saddened today by the death of Attorney Jesse M. Hatch, dean of the Marshall and Calhoun County bar, and for 60 years a practicing attorney in Marshall, who passed away at 9:00 o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. Glenn E. Grant, 309, East Mansion Street.
---Mr. Hatch had been in failing health for soem time but had been critically ill only a week. Until only a short time ago he had gone to his law office almost daily.
---Mr. Hatch was born in Lee township May 27, 1858, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Monroe Hatch. The family subsequently moved to Fredonia township and Mr. Hatch entered the Marshall public schools graduating in 1876. He studied law in the office of William I. Geer in this city for two years and then entered the law school of the University of Michigan in 1878, graduating in 1880. After graduation he continued his studies in the law office of Judge Woodruff and began the practice of law.
---Mr. Hatch was united in marriage to Miss Ella M. Willard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lovett J. Willard of Battle Creek, October 7, 1885, Mrs. Hatch passed away November 14, 1937.
---He served two terms as prosecuting attorney from 1897 in 1901 and represented the eastern district of Calhoun county in the state legislature two terms from 1909 to 1913 and he also served two terms as circuit court commissioner.
---Mr. Hatch represented a high type of citizenship and was unusually devoted to his family. His whole life was devoted to his fam- (Concluded on Page 2, Column 8) ily and to his law practice.
---Mr. Hatch took a __ __ in the Bull Moose political movement which swept the country in 1912 and was one of the leaders in Calhoun county who supported the candidacy of Theodore Roosevelt in that campaign.
---Commanding the respect and esteem of all who knew him, Mr. Hatch was a successful attorney with a wide acquaintence through the county. A member of the Calhoun County Bar Association and the Michigan State Bar association before the illness with which he was first stricken several years ago and had many times distinguished himself in important Calhoun county court cases.
---He is survived by six children, Judge Blaine W. Hatch, Mrs. Robert Evans, Mrs. Glenn E. Grant, Mrs. Robert P. McKenzie and Attorney Donald J. Hatch of Wyandotte. There are also surviving thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
---The funeral will occur at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn E. Grant. Rev. John Love, rector of Trinity Episcopal church officiating. The interment will be at Oakridge cemetery.
