He and Rebecca Elizabeth Dix married 1873 in Vigo County, In.

Chartley and Rebecca moved to Chadron, Nebraska. He was a "Curcuit Rider" where he covered wide circuits of preaching, marrying, baptizing, & doing funerals. Through the blinding blizzards in winter, and the burning sands in summer.

In 1903 they moved to Oklahoma, where he preached, organized, and Pastored churches. ``He was a powerful preacher, and a "humbel minister''. He was a minister for the Methodist's first and than became a Baptist minister.
