Christopher married Jessie Milligan on June 18, 1877 at Oregon, IL. They were the parents of George, Margaret, Mary, Ellen, Elizabeth, Ida Mae, Clark Edward, John, and Faye Anabelle.

Dec 6, 1938 - Carroll Daily - Chris Smith, one of Carroll's pioneer residents, died of pneumonia at St Anthony hospital at 2:46 Monday afternoon. His age was 85 years. Mr. Smith had been in failing health for the last seven years. A week ago he became ill and last Wednesday night he was taken to the hospital.

The body is resting at the Huffman Funeral Home until 9 o'clock Thursday morning, when it will be taken to the family home on East Street, where it will repose until 11:30 that morning. Funeral services with the Rev.W.F. Clayburg, minister of the Methodist Church, officiating, will be held at the Huffman Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in East Liberty Cemetery, northeast of Lidderdale.

Christopher Robert Smith was born at Castle Douglas, Scotland, in 1843. He remained in the land of his birth when at the age of 21, he came to the U.S. locating at Whitenack, Illinois. June 18, 1877 Mr Smith was married to Miss Jessie Milligan, daughter of Captian William Milligan at Oregon, Illinois. Mr & Mrs Smith lived at Illinois for 5 years before coming to Carroll county. They arrived in this county Sept 27, 1882 and have lived here ever since that time.

After farming for a number of years in Sheridan township, they moved to their farm about two and one-half miles west of Carroll, where they lived for many years. Since their retirement in January 1915, Mr. and Mrs. Smith have resided in their home on North East Street. Mr. Smith, who was always active, made daily trips downtown to mingle with his friends. He had been downtown the morning of the day that he was taken seriously ill, necessitating his removal to the hospital that night. Mr. Smith was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Carroll.

Survivors include his wife, one son, George J. Smith, of Dix, Neb.; six daughters, Mrs. Margaret Hubbard, Carroll; Mrs. Mary Mulcare, Modesto, Calif.; Mrs. Ellen Enger, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. C.G. Lindsey (Elizabeth), Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. C.H. White (Ida Mae), Philadelphia, Pa.; Mrs. William Haversack (Faye Anabelle), Minneapolis, Minn.; thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Two sons preceded their father in death. Clark Edward died in infancy and John M. Smith of Ladora passed away Nov. 28, 1937.

George J. Smith, Mrs. Haversack and Mrs. Enger were here when their father passed away, having arrived Monday morning. Mrs. White of Philadelphia, Mrs. John M. Smith of Ladora, John Milligan of Rochelle, Illinois, a brother of Mrs. Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hubbard of Chicago will also be here for the funeral services.
