US Congressman. Born in Colchester, Connecticut, he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1829, and established a practice first in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, then later in Allentown, Pennsylvania. After serving as Town Clerk, and as a deputy Lehigh County Attorney General, he was elected as a Democrat to represent Pennsylvania's 6th District in the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Congressman John W. Hornbeck. He served a single term from March 6, 1848 to March 3, 1849, and was not a candidate for re-election to the seat. In 1852 he was elected outright to represent Pennsylvania's 7th District, serving another single term from March 4, 1853 to March 3, 1855. He ran again for re-election, but was defeated in the race by Congressman Samuel C. Bradshaw. He returned to his Allentown law practice, not entering the political arena until the 1870s, when he was elected for the third time to the United States House of Representatives, this time representing Pennsylvania's 10th District. He served yet one more single term from March 4, 1877 to March 3, 1879, and did not run again for the seat (which was then filled by Congressman Rueben K. Bachman. Resuming his law practice again; he died in Allentown in 1884.
