U.S. Congressman. Elected to represent South Carolina in the United States House of Representatives, from 1837 to 1839. Also served as a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives in 1820, South Carolina State Attorney General in 1830, U.S. Charge d'Affairs to Belgium from 1832 to 1836 and U.S. Attorney General from 1841 to 1843.
