U.S. Congressman. Born in Pocopson Township, Pennsylvania, he was a school teacher for several years, established a school in Ercildoun in 1851, plus made stenographic reports of sermons, lectures and speeches for the morning dailies of Philadelphia. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain in an independent company of cavalry, for the Pennsylvania Volunteer Emergency Militia. After the war, he conducted an extensive banking and brokerage business and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1872. In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses, serving until 1891. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the brokerage business and banking, until his death at age 71 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He was also a cousin of US Congressmen Edward and Issac Darlington.
