U.S. Senator. He attended Swarthmore College and engaged in the textile industry in Bristol, Pennsylvania. He was president of a large woolen manufacture served as president of r the Pennsylvania Manufacturers Association, (1909-30). In 1929, he was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the refusal of the Senate to seat William S. Vare, serving until 1930. An unsuccessful candidate for Re-nomination, he returned to his textile industry interests. At the time of his death at age 98, he was the oldest living former Senator and the last living Senator who was alive during the Civil War.
