Pearl Harbor veteran and Gardnerville resident Vernon M. Latshaw died April 3, 2011, at his home.

Born on Nov. 3, 1923, in Sawtelle, Calif., to Carl and Pearl Latshaw, he was the fourth of five sons.

After graduation from Montebello High School, Mr. Latshaw enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Maryland at the battle of Pearl Harbor. After his discharge from the Navy in 1947, he attended UCLA in Southern California.

He retired from the insurance industry, having spent most of his career as a casualty expert. He and his wife Betti moved to Gardnerville in 1995. Mr. Latshaw had a great knowledge and love of his country, and since his retirement he had been active in political critique which he shared in numerous letters to the editor over the years.

He was preceded in death by daughter Jeanine Marie Latshaw. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Betti; daughter Laura Latshaw of Sunnyvale, Calif. and brothers Kenneth and Wesley Latshaw. Mr. Latshaw will be cremated and buried at the Northern Nevada Veteran's Cemetery in Fernley. No service will be held. The family requests contributions be made to the American Lung Association of St. Mary's Hospice. Walton's Funerals and Cremation are entrusted with the arrangements.
