Michigan Governor. He served in Cuba with the 31st Michigan Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War and rose to the rank of first lieutenant and battalion adjutant. At the end of the war, he continued his military service in the Michigan National Guard for fourteen years rising to the rank of brigadier general. He began a law practice in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1899 and became the City Attorney. He later became an attorney for the Ypsilanti Furniture Company and when that company moved to Ionia in 1903, he moved and was made general manager of the Ypsilanti-Reed Furniture Company. He discontinued his law practice and bought control of the company in 1907. He was elected mayor of Ionia, serving from 1913 to 1916, and was president of the National Bank of Ionia from 1919 to 1933. On November 2, 1926, he was elected Governor of Michigan as a Republican and was re-elected two years later. During his tenure from 1927 until 1931, he worked to establish a new code of criminal procedure, a uniform traffic code, a new code of school law, and augmentation of the workmen's compensation law. The legislature established a comprehansive budget system and provided funding for a state hospital building program. He continued to be active in Republican politics when he retired from the governorship in 1931. He was National Commander of the Spanish-American War Veterans from 1929 until 1930.
