U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the law department of Washington and Lee University, in 1907, was admitted to the bar that same year and commenced to practice law in Appalachia, Virginia. He served as Commonwealth’s attorney for Buchanan County, (1916-17), was a lawyer in private practice and also engaged in banking, (1917-30). In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second Congress and to the next eight succeeding Congresses, serving until 1949. During his term, he was congressional adviser to the first session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations at Quebec, in 1945. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 70.
