He attended the Danville Academy, graduated from the law school of the University of Virginia, in 1857, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice in Danville, Virginia, in 1858. At the advent of the Civil War, he was the Commonwealth Attorney of Danville, when he was commissioned a Major in the Confederate Army in 1861. He rose to the rank of Colonel in command of the 18th Regiment, Virginia Infantry and served until the war's end. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving (1875-87). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he continued to practice law until his death at age 70.
