CARBONDALE -- Thomas Jenison Hatton, 75, of De Soto, Kan., died Tuesday, April 12, 2011.

A celebration of life will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, in Grace United Methodist Church, 11485 S Ridgeview, Olathe, Kan. Inurnment will be in North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Iowa; at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Karl L. King Municipal Band in Fort Dodge, Iowa or .

Thomas was born Dec. 19, 1935, to Douglas and Virgie Jenison Hatton in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

He served in the Air National Guard. Thomas received his master's and Ph.D. degrees in English from University of Nebraska. Thomas married Lois Jean Dunn June 5, 1960, in West Bend, Iowa. He was a professor of English literature at Southern Illinois University Carbondale for 31 years. After retirement, he and his wife moved to De Soto, Kan., to be closer to their children. He enjoyed the companionship of his family and cats, playing tennis and performing with several local bands.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; a brother, James Hatton of Kansas City, Mo.; son, Douglas Joseph Hatton of Lawrence, Kan.; daughters, Heather Grace and husband, Mark Hunley, of Littleton, Colo., and Ginger Marie Hatton of Dillon, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Jason, Elena and Renee.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents.
