He was a doctor in Cobden, Union, Illinois and died at his home. He and his wife Emma Nicholson lived in Cobden across the street from Emma's brother in law James Bell. Emma's first marriage was to William Bell. James McLoney, William Bell and Emma Nicholson McLoney are all buried in the Nicholson Family Plot in Pittsburgh's Allegheny Cemetery which was owned by siblings John Nicholson and Abraham Nicholson as well as John's daughter Emma Nicholson Bell son-in-law Joseph Eichbaum.
