Robert D. Acuff was the son of John H and Matilda Emily Billingsley Acuff. He enlisted in Company E, 1st Tennessee Infantry, USA on August 20, 1861 at Camp Dick Robinson, Kentucky. Promoted to Sergeant March 15, 1862. Robert was wounded in action and left at Somerset, Kentucky on August 4, 1863. Died of wounds. He was originally buried at Somerset and classed among the unknown dead; reburied at Mill Springs National Cemetery.
