U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Harvard University in 1801, taught at Leicester Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1804. Entering politics, he served in the Massachusetts State Senate, (1813-17). In 1817, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth through the Seventeenth Congresses and reelected as an Adams-Clay Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, serving until 1825. After leaving Congress, he was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1825-28), Massachusetts State Councilor, in 1828 and again served in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, in 1831.
