Elton T. Darling, well known resident of the village of Poland died about 6 o'clock on Saturday in Herkimer Memorial Hospital, as a result of injuries received when he was struck by an automobile late Thursday night in Poland village.
Darling was driving a team of horses, going toward Poland when the rig he was driving was struck by a car driven by Leland Tompkins of Newport, who was going in the same direction.
Thompkins reports that he was blinded by lights of an approaching machine and failed to see the rig ahead of him until he reached a point only a few feet from it and despite all efforts to prevent a crash, the two collided, throwing Darling to the pavement.
It was further alleged that there was no light on the rig. Darling was placed in a passing motorist's car and rushed to Herkimer Memorial hospital where Dr. L. L. Kelley of Middleville attended the injuries.
Darling suffered from a fractured skull and internal injuries which caused his death today.
Mr. Darling was a resident of Poland for the last 21 years where he was engaged in the trucking business. He was born in Salisbury 61 years ago a son of the late Delancy and Isabelle Comstock Darling. He married Alice Manning over 20 years ago.
The funeral were held Tuesday at 2 o'clock from his late home in Poland. Rev. Haven of Newport officiated.
