MUNCIE--Ruth Ellen Redd passed away on Monday. Her final days days were spent in St. Vincent Hospice and in her home under the care of St. John Hospice.

Ruth Ellen was born in Connersville, IN, to the union of Rieman Rhinehart and Louie (Keene) Rhinehart. She resided in Muncie, IN for 65 years.

She graduated from Connersville High School in 1944. She graduated from Ball State Teachers' College in 1948, where she studied French, English and Spanish. She was a member of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority.

She taught high school Spanish and junior college French in Kansas City, Kansas. After two years in Kansas, she returned to Muncie, IN and obtained a job with the Muncie Housing Authority. In 1950, she married Roscoe Redd and took up permanent residence in Muncie. From this union one daughter, Carolyn Reed Reeves, was born.

In 1954 she began her teaching career at Longfellow Elementary School. In 1962 she moved to Kuhner Junior High School where she taught Spanish, English, and Social Studies. During this time, she earned a graduate certificate in Guidance. She started the guidance classes for ninth graders at Kuhner. In 1970 she became the Director of Guidance at Kuhner. In 1972 she moved to the "old" Central as a full time counselor. At the "new" Central, she taught Spanish and was a part time guidance counselor. At the time of her retirement in 1988, she was a full time couselor. Throughout her career she always strived to encourage and motivate her students and counselors to become enlightened, educated, and contributing citizens. She loved her students and they loved her.

Ruth Ellen was very active in the Muncie community. She was a former supervisor of the Y-Teems, former member of the Munsyana Day Nursery Board, Family Counseling Board, Calvary Baptist Church Flower Guild, Junior Missionary and BTU. At the time of her death she was on the Board of Directors of Huffer Memorial Children's Center; a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Honorary Sorority, Indiana Federated Club of Colored Women, Coalition of 100 Women, Motivate Our Minds volunteer, Christian Women United Gideon's and the Reflecting Lights (Northeastern District), Indiana State Teacher's Association, and National Education Association.

Ruth Ellen accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member in her church in Connersville, IN. She was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of the Antioch Baptist Church. She directed the Youth department for many years, taught Sunday school, led the Vacation Bible School, directed the Christmas and Easter Pageants, had belonged to the Senior and Mass Choirs, Senior Missionary, Deaconess, Scholarship Committee, Women of Antioch and the Kitchen Committee.

She leaves to cherish her memory one devoted daughter, Carolyn Redd Reeves (Albert), of Fort Wayne, IN; one grandson, Damien; twin granddaughters, Meisha and Delisha; one great-granddaughter, Jaidence; five aunts, Adell Thomas, Fishers, IN, Josephine Douglas (Johnnie), Prince Gordon, Roberta White (Earnest) and Eva Allender, all of Indianapolis, IN; one uncle, Joseph Keene of Indianapolis, IN; a special nephew, Carl Rhinehart, Jr. (Sylvia) and precious niece, Margarita Dodson (David) of Indianapolis, IN; precious cousins, Bash Pickering (Frederick), Michael Jeremiah, Dennis Perkins (Marva), and Little Dennis Junior (Kristin), all of Connersville, IN; MaryEdna Martin and daughters, Toni and Christy, Odenton, MD, Robecca Potter, Indianapolis, IN, Pam Morris, Indianapolis, IN; devoted sisters-in-law, Delores Rhinehart, Muncie, IN, and Margarite Rhinehart, Temple Hill, Maryland; and a host of other relatives and friends. She treasured the friendship of Anniebell Broaddus, Mattie Coleman, and Gracie Foster; her caregivers, Johnnie Scott, Vergie Wayne, and Pat Montgomery, and she loved her pastor and his wife, Reverend and Mrs. Eddie Long.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving and devoted husband of 55 years, Roscoe Redd; two brothers, Carl Rhinehart and Rieman Rhinehart; one sister, Georgianna Rhinehart; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Long officiating. Calling hours will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at the church and one hour prior to services on Tuesday. Interment will be at Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Faulkner's Mortuary.
