Shirley Mae Montover
(May 20, 1921 - June 12, 2004)
Shirley May Montover of Silt passed away Saturday,
June 12, 2004, at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.
She was 83.
Shirley was born May 20, 1921, at the Dove Ranch in Burns to Clell
and Isabelle Baker (Potter). She spent her early childhood in Burns,
and the family later moved to Glenwood Springs. She graduated
from Glenwood Springs High School. Shirley met Leno Montover in
Carbondale, and they married March 2, 1940, in Price, Utah. They
had two children, Joyce and Joe.
They lived in Rock Springs, Wyo., for several years before moving to
Silt, where they ranched for many years. Shirley worked at the
Safeway in Rifle until it closed, and then for several more years at
the Rifle Food Market.
In 1972, the Montovers bought their pasture up East Divide Creek,
and they enjoyed many years of happiness there. In her own words,
"It's a beautiful evening, robins singing and so still. Makes a guy
thank God for every time we come in. I wouldn't trade this place for
all the townhouses that was ever built." Twenty years later, she
wrote, "I still feel the same way. I thank God every time I come
through the gate." She was able to spend her last Mother's Day
there.
Shirley was preceded in death by her daughter Joyce Robinson; her
parents Clell and Isabelle Baker; a sister, Cecil McDaniel; and
brothers Sydney and Bob Baker.
Shirley was survived by her husband Leno of Silt, and her son Joe
and his wife, Mary of Silt; six grandchildren, Ray (and wife
April) Robinson of Fort Stewart, Ga.; Julie* (and husband
Lonny) Lynch of Rifle; Chris (and wife Anita) Montover of
Parachute, Adam (and wife Kristi) Montover of Silt, Tim (and
wife Darshon) Montover of Parachute, and Jesse Montover of
Silt; and by nine great-grandchildren, Holly and Laine Lynch,
Steven, Nickolas and Tristan Montover, Rosalie Montover; and
Cody, Aurora and Faith Robinson.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, at the
Congressional Church of Silt. Internment will follow at the Silt
Cemetery.
Farnum-Holt Funeral Home of Glenwood Springs is in charge of
arrangements. Shirley is buried in the Skyline Cemetery in Silt.
