Born in Manchester, N.H., he was a 1939 graduate of Springfield's Cathedral High School. He was an All-City high school football player, and also attended American International College.
He lived in Springfield for 30 years before moving here to Westfield in 1955. He was a third-degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 100, a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, and a member of the Tekoa Country Club.
He served during World War II in the 101st Airborne ("Screaming Eagles") Division, which fought in Normandy, Holland, and at Bastogne, Belgium, in the Ardennes campaign.
McCaffrey leaves his wife, the former Mildred M. Duquette; a son, Edward M. Jr. of West Springfield; a daughter, Kathleen M. LaBreck of Chicopee; a brother, James of Springfield; two sisters, Doris Thibault of San Jose, Calif., and Mary Schubach of South Hadley, and seven grandchildren.
Another daughter, Margaret, died in 1966.
The funeral will be Thursday morning at Robert E. Cusack Funeral Home and the church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. There are no calling hours, and memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 383 Dwight St., Holyoke, 01040.
