Wife of U.S. Congressman Harold VOLKMER.

Shirley Volkmer, 60,
wife of longtime congressman

(News & Observer, Raleigh, NC; Dec. 9, 1995)

WASHINGTON - Shirley Volkmer, wife of veteran Democratic Congressman Harold Volkmer of Missouri, died after a six-month battle with cancer. She was 60.

Mrs. Volkmer died Thursday morning at Arlington Hospital in suburban Virginia. She was first diagnosed with inoperable cancer near her gallbladder in early July.

"She was a very gracious lady who was well-loved and will be sorely missed," said Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan. "She was a source of strength and inspiration to Congressman Volkmer, and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

As his wife's illness progressed, Congressman Volkmer spent much of his time at her side, forcing him to miss some committee meetings and preventing him from making trips back to his district.

Shirley Braskett met Harold Volkmer while she was studying at what was then called Christian College in Columbia, Missouri. They were married August 20, 1955.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Volkmer is survived by her brother, Richard Braskett of Columbus, Ohio; by three children (Jerry, John, and Beth); and by five grandchildren.

(NOTE: One of her grandchildren was
Jonathan David Volkmer.)
