Margaret "Peg" L. (Gill) Astorino, age 80, of Brookville, Pa., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017, at the McKinley Health Center in Brookville, Pa.
Peg was born on May 1, 1937, to the late James and Martha (Nelson) Gill, in Sykesville, Pa. On Aug. 11, 1956, she married Samuel F. Astorino; Sam preceded her in passing on April 1, 2007.
Peg attended school in the Punxsutawney area. Throughout her life she took care of her own home and early in her working life she held a position as a bookkeeper. Most people would recognize Sam and Peg's contributions in our community from their time owning and operating the Golden Dawn Grocery Store, which opened in the mid 1970's. For 14 years they provided jobs, goods, and services from their business. After they moved forward from the grocery store they opened Tony's Li'l Roma Restaurant, in Brookville, Pa., which they operated until they retired.
Peg was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Brookville, Pa. She contributed many recipes and insights to the Catholic Church Cookbook, of which many people enjoyed. She loved to cook, especially Italian food.
Peg was very concerned about her family, and she loved being able to prepare meals for them whether it was a large family gathering, or a weekly dinner, she loved being around them all. She also enjoyed passing the time with painting, a hobby that she picked up later in life. Peg also enjoyed playing Bingo, and her two favorite spots were the Reynoldsville Foundry, and the Summerville Fire Hall. She loved going out shopping for new things, but she lived a simple life.
Peg is survived by four daughters: Pamela (Richard) Cook, Jeanne Smith, Mary (Michael) Schuckers, Jaime (Jeff) Caylor; one son, Samuel Astorino; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Peg is preceded in death by one daughter; Barb Aaron.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m., at the McKinney – d'Argy Funeral Home, ltd, 345 Main St., Brookville, PA 15825. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 129 Graham Ave., Brookville, PA 15825, beginning at 10 a.m., and officiated by Father William Laska. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, Rose Twp., Jefferson Co., Pa.
