Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart, PFC Salvatore V. Angrisane, 24, was killed in action at the Battle of Tunisia, an Allied victory in North Africa. The young infantryman from Essex County, NJ, was the son of Vincenzo and Carmella Angrisane. The battle in which he lost his life had pitted Allied commanders Dwight D. Eisenhower of the US and Field Marshall Montgomery of Great Britain against the German "Desert Fox", Irwin Rommel, and was fought from March 20 until May 7, 1943. It ended with the fall of the strategic port cities Tunis and Bizerte to the Allies, making possible the subsequent invasion of Europe via Sicily.
