Governor of Nebraska, 1901 to 1903. He and his parents moved to Iowa shortly after his birth. After graduating from high school, he attended Iowa College. He enlisted in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War but was later discharged due to a disability. After the war, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1875. He moved to Custer County, Nebraska and worked in the stock commission business. He was elected to the Nebraska House of Representatives serving two terms. When he left office, he moved to Omaha, and became the first mayor of South Omaha in 1887, followed by city councilman in 1888. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1900 and took over as governor one year later when the current governor resigned. He did not seek re-election and retired from public service. Moving to Tacoma, Washington, he worked in the lumber industry. His third wife Esther survived his passing.
