U.S. Congressman. He attended Pleasant Plain Academy, moved to Wyoming, in 1855 and was employed as a ranch hand and was a teacher. Studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1889 and commenced to practice law in Bassett, Nebraska. Relocating to Tacoma, Washington, in 1891, he continued the practice of law and was a member of Troop B, 1st Cavalry, Washington National Guard, (1896-03). In 1899, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-sixth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 42.
