Born in Cumberland, Md., son of Thomas G. and Virginia G. (Frye) Pownall. His
father managed The Union Tanning Company operations. He was on the Mexican
border with Company G of the MD Nat'l Guard in 1916 when he attained the rank of
Sergeant. Mr. Pownall served in WWI and again during WWII. He enlisted 15 Oct
1942 and was discharged 8 Mar 1944, having reached the rank of Maj. with the
372nd Eng. Regt, Camp Cleburne, LA.
