Don "Doc" W. Adams, 75, of Springfield, passed away at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at his home.

Don was born December 11, 1935 in Springfield, the son of John and Bertha Yates Adams. He married Sally Hardwick in Springfield.

Don was a graduate of Lanphier High School and had attended Northwestern University and SIU. He retired from the State of Illinois in 2007. He proudly served our country in the United States Air Force in active and reserve duty. Don was a precinct committee man before he could vote and rose to become chairman of Illinois State Republican Party. He was active in Republican conventions and was a member of President Reagan's transition team.

He was a chairman of the Springfield Youth Commission and Illinois Electoral College. He was a member of Springfield Public Building Commission, Illinois State Electoral Board and U.S. Commission of Presidential Scholars. He was the vice chairman of the Illinois State Board of Elections and was chairman and Commissioner of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. Don was also a member of the Illinois Republican State Central Committee, chairman of Republican State Convention, Senior Republican State Chairman, special assistant to Republican National Committee, a member of the Republican National Committee Executive Committee, office and at-large delegate of Illinois Delegation, Republican National Convention, chairman and member of Media Relations Subcommittee and Special Events for the Republican National Committee Convention, chairman of the Illinois Republican State Committee and Midwest Republic State Chairmen's Association and he was a national chairman of the Republican State Chairmen, Advisory Committee. Don was a member of Capitol Hill Club, Y.M.C.A., Island Bay Yacht Club, and Sangamo Club.

Don enjoyed morel mushroom hunting, fishing, duck hunting and reading history books. He was a great cook, world traveler, and poker player and mostly enjoyed politics and fine dining.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Hardwick Adams of Springfield; three sons, Donald (wife, Jade) of Beijing, China, David of Salisbury and Mark Adams; one daughter, Jane Adams of Springfield; one step-daughter, Elizabeth L. Epping of Portland, OR; one brother, John Adams of St. Petersburg, FL; one niece and two nephews; and his faithful companion, Winston.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.

Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
