Cyril the son of Cyril S. Townley and Beverly D. Stearns Townley of Staten Island NY, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on December 27, 1967 in Brooklyn NY. Arriving in Vietnam on Janurary 14, 1969 he was assigned for duty with Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On November 12, during a search and clear mission in the Que Son Mountains, Company A made contact and engaged a NVA force. Fire fights with the enemy lasted throughout the day and into the night, pulling back from the Marines postions, the enemy utilized effective 60mm mortar fire against the Marines resulting in the deaths of two men and the wounding of several others.

Evacuated, LCpl Townley died at the 95th Evac Hospital in DaNang of multiple fragmentaion wounds from hostitle mortar fire on the previous day.
