...Virgene was born August 8, 1925, in the family home in Beaver Township, to Philip and Ursula (Lentz) Lawler. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1942. She was in the Homemaking Club and the Camera Club. She was Homecoming Queen her senior year. After high school she worked in the Boone County Courthouse in 1941-42, also the Ankeny Ordinance Plant in 1943. She met Paul Lowry while working in Boone, and they were married on June 10, 1944 at St. John's Catholic Church in Ogden, Iowa. Paul was a tail gunner on the bomber "Fortress II" when it was gunned down by German forces on January 10, 1945 near Cologne, Germany. Paul Lowry was declared KIA, a casualty of World War II. Virgene raised their daughter, with the help of her parents, by Ogden. She then married Jack Nation on August 4, 1949 at St. John's Catholic Church in Ogden. They made their home near Rippey, Iowa. They later divorced in 1975.
...Virgene provided home care for many elderly people around Grand Junction, Iowa. She was active in the Grand Junction Business and Professional Women's Club, St. Brigid Altar Society, Green County Meals on Wheels, and Greene County ARC (food pantry). Her hobbies included spectator sports, sewing, reading, gardening, furniture refinishing, bird watching, going to auctions, and puttering outside. She took great pride in and pleasure from her family.
...Virgene was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Leo Lawler and Charles Lawler; her sisters Grace Garland, and Vera Lawler; her brother-in-law Pat Garland; her sister-in-law Jackie Lawler; and granddaughter Grace Nation.
...Survivors include her eleven children and one sister-in-law, 29 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, plus many other relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed by many.
...She will be buried at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in the Lawler family plot beside her grandmother and grandfather.
