Sergeant First Class Caldwell was a member of Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He initially served in the Army from December 21, 1945 to December 20, 1948 before re-entering the service on January 1, 1950, enlisting in Arlington, VA. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy near Unsan, North Korea on November 2, 1950, and we was declared missing in action. Following the war, Sergeant Caldwell was promoted to Sergeant First Class. His remains were identified on April 12, 2010, and on April 25, 2011, he was laid to rest near his wife's grave. His wife Helen waited the rest of her life for her husband to come home. She died in 1979. Sergeant First Class Caldwell was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. SFC's two children survive him: a son, Johnston Caldwell, who was three when his father died, and Kimm Caldwell Dybowski, who was two when her father died.
