Born in Ellisburg, New York, Wood moved to Sandusky County, Ohio in 1833 and was active as a farmer. Apparently he never studied law, though this did not hinder him from pursuing politics in his late 20s. He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1840 to 1842, and the State Senate in 1845. Wood won a special 1849 election to the Thirty-First US Congress to fill the vacancy left by the death of Rudolphus Dickinson, and served until his own death in office 11 months later. There is a cenotaph in his memory at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
