Services for Joseph Banta Being Held Here Today

Funeral services for Joseph E. Banta, 84, retired Mamm creek rancher, are being held this afternoon at the Christian church. Mr. Banta died Friday evening in San Diego California following a heart attack. Otto B. Duckworth is officiating at the services and interment will be made in the Divide Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Banta was one of the pioneers of Garfield County, coming to the Mamm creek district, southeast of Rifle in 1884 and taking up a homestead there. He lived with his family, his wife and their eight children, on the homestead for many years. Five of his children and his wife have preceded him in death.
After Mrs. Banta's death about 18 years ago, Mr. Banta retired from active farm life and has spent his winters in California and his summers at Glenwood Springs since that time.
Joseph Banta was born in Pulaski, Iowa, October 4, 1854 and moved to Leadville and to Aspen in 1874. He engaged in mining at those places for several years before moving to Mamm Creek.
He is survived by his son Charles Banta; two daughters Mrs. Annie Rees of Alamosa and Mrs. Lillie Stevenson of Oskaloosa, Iowa and four grandchildren. The son and two daughters are here for the funeral services.
