US Congressman, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. The son of United Syayes Postmaster General Gideon Granger, he graduated from Yale College in 1811, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1816 and commenced to practice law in Canandaigua, New York. He was a member of the New York State Assembly, and elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress, serving from 1835 to 1837. He was again elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving 1839 to 1841. In March 1841, he was appointed by President William Henry Harrison the 10th Postmaster General, serving until September 1841. He was then elected to the Twenty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Greig, serving 1841 to 1843. After leaving Congress, he was Chairman of the Whig National Executive Committee, and a member of the peace convention of 1861.
