US Senator. Educated at private schools, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice in Snohomish, Territory of Washington, in 1883. He was assistant prosecuting attorney for the third judicial district of the Territory of Washington (1887-89), city attorney of Seattle (1888-89) and general counsel of the Pacific Coast Company, (1895-1905). In 1905, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served until 1911. Not a candidate for renomination, he resumed the practice of law in Seattle, Washington and was appointed by President Warren Harding as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Colombia. Serving (1922-28). He then retired to California, where live until his death at age 81.
