U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1845 and practiced law in Mansfield, Ohio. He was judge of the court of common pleas of the sixth judicial district, (1856-73). In 1890, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1887. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 68.
