LAVALE,MARYLAND -- Paul Heckert, 81, died at the Western Maryland Regional Health Center, Monday, Jan. 17, 2011.

Born in Lewistown, Pa., on May 30, 1929, he was the son of the late Paul K. and Clara (Plessinger) Heckert. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Christina Heckert.

He is survived by his wife Sara; and daughters Druann Heckert, Fayetteville, N.C., Diane Heckert, Springfield, Va.; and sons Paul A. Heckert and wife Sue, Cullowhee, N.C.; Alan Heckert and wife Helen, Gaithersburg, and Alex Heckert and wife Gale, Indiana, Pa. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jessica Heckert, Carina and husband Dario Saucedo, Paul S. Heckert, Kyle Heckert, and Kelsey Heckert.

Paul served in the U.S. Army from 1948-1950. He graduated from Catawba College, 1951 and from Lancaster Theological Seminary, 1954, and was ordained as a minister. He received his MS and PhD in Sociology from Cornell University in 1964. He served as a United Church of Christ missionary in Honduras from 1954-1960. Paul was Chairman of Sociology at Catawba College 1964-1968 and organizer and Chairman of the joint Dept. of Sociology at Catawba and Livingstone College, Salisbury, NC from 1968-1972. He was a professor and Chairman of the Dept. of Sociology at Frostburg State University from 1972-1994.

After retirement, Paul volunteered at the FCI Cumberland as a PVS Visitor for about 10 years. He was a member of the Allegany County Retired School Personnel and served two terms as president. Paul has been listed in Who's Who in America since 1988. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Hyndman, Pa.

A memorial service will be held at First UCC in Hyndman on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Tomislav Dosch officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be sent to First UCC, Hyndman, Pa 15545 or Prisoner Visitation and Support, 1501 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, PA 19101.
