John B. "JB" McDaniel, 23, of LCO died on Friday, April 22. John Beauford "JB" was born on March 15, 1988 in Hayward the son of Samuel McDaniel and Brenda Beaudin. He graduated from Hayward High School 2007. In high school JB played basketball, football and track and also played hockey when he was younger. JB was a sports fanatic. He loved all sports and had an extensive knowledge of sporting events and statistics. JB worked at the Waterfront Restaurant since 2003. He is survived by his father, Sam McDaniel of Cable; mother, Brenda Beaudin of Hayward; brothers, Nathan and Derrick McDaniel of Hayward; grandmothers, Frances Sawyer of Edenton, N.C, Delores Beaudin of Hayward. JB was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Beauford McDaniel, Steven Beaudin; uncle, John "JB" McDaniel.
Tribal Funeral Rites will be held beginning at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27 at Pineview Funeral Service in Hayward. Paul DeMain will officiate. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Reserve.
Visitation will be held beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 at the funeral home. Casketbearers will be Av Beaudin, Adam Fear, Cody Gustafson, Dan Gustafson, Christopher Kessenich and John Wolters. Pineview Funeral Service in Hayward assisting JB's family with the arrangements.

The Sawyer County Sheriff's Department today identified the person fatally stabbed last Friday during an altercation at a Bacon Square residence on the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation as John B. "J.B." McDaniel, 23, a 2007 graduate of Hayward High School. Chief Deputy Brigette Kornbroke said an autopsy was performed by the Ramsey County medical examiner's office, and that McDaniel's death has been ruled a homicide due to multiple stab wounds.
Kornbroke said that John McDaniel's brother Derrick McDaniel, 19, was critically injured with multiple stab wounds and is currently being treated in a Duluth hospital.
A third individual, a juvenile, was injured during the incident and is also being treated in a Duluth hospital, Kornbroke said.
She said two adults have been arrested in connection with the incident. Caleb Michael Miller, 18, and Marvin Alex Corbine, 20, have been charged with being party to homicide and party to attempted homicide. Corbine was injured during the event; he was treated and released from Hayward Area Memorial Hospital on Friday and was taken into custody Friday afternoon. Both suspects are being held in the Sawyer County Jail on $50,000 cash bonds, Kornbroke said.
Investigators worked through the weekend interviewing numerous individuals and have identified seven persons including Miller and Corbine who went to the McDaniel residence at approximately 4:30 a.m. Friday. Specific details of the incident are not being released to preserve the integrit of the investigadtion, Kornbroke said. Additional charges are being considered and will referred to the district attorney. Two of the persons involved are juveniles and will be referred to Sawyer County Human Services, Kornbroke said.
On Saturday evening, officers recovered instrments that are believed to have been utilized in the crimes. A state crime lab crew assisted with the investigation into the incident at 13273W Bacon Square.
"There are rumors in the community that this was a gang-related incident," Kornbroke said. "The victims in this case have never been identiffied to law enforcement as having any gang affiliations."

Charges of first-degree intentional homicide and party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide were filed this week against two local men by Sawyer County District Attorney Thomas Van Roy in connection with an April 22 altercation and stabbing at a Bacon Square residence on the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation.
Charged are Marvin Alex "Mackey" Corbine Jr., 20, 9044N Indian Trail, Hayward, and Caleb Michael Miller, 18, 12741W Day Care Drive, Hayward. They are jailed on $50,000 cash bonds and are scheduled to make their initial appearances in Sawyer County Circuit Court on Monday, May 23.
Corbine and Miller are charged with homicide in connection with the death of John B. "J.B." McDaniel, 23, and are charged with party to attempted homicide in relation to stab wounds sustained by McDaniel's brother, Derrick McDaniel, 19.
Corbine and Miller also are charged with party to aggravated battery and criminal trespass to a dwelling. Corbine is charged with felony bail jumping.
Early on April 22, Sawyer County sheriff's deputies and Lac Courte Oreilles police responded to the residence on Bacon Square off Round Lake School Road, where an altercation involving numerous individuals was reported to be taking place.

Derrick McDaniel was critically injured with multiple stab wounds and was airlifted to a Duluth hospital. A third individual, a juvenile, also was injured during the incident and was treated in a Duluth hospital. The juvenile's name has not been released.
According to reports filed by Sawyer County sheriff's investigators, Sawyer County deputies and LCO police officers, the first officers to arrive at the scene on April 22 saw Derrick McDaniel exit the font door; he was covered with blood. He yelled "Come help my brother."
The officers saw J.B. McDaniel lying on his back in the middle of the living room floor. He also was covered with blood and was wearing only a pair of blue jeans. An officer could not find a pulse on McDaniel and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); he could not get a response.
The officers called for two ambulances. They asked Derrick McDaniel what happened and McDaniel replied he could not remember anything and could not remember who was there. Derrick was observed to have multiple injuries including a puncture wound to his back and large gashes on top of his head and on his face. A tooth was hanging from his mouth.
A person who had been driving around with Miller and Corbine told an investigator that when they arrived at the McDaniel residence, they were looking for a place to stay and party. The house was dark and Miller and Corbine went and knocked on the front door and the witness believes someone let them in.
The witness said he and a juvenile went inside and saw Corbine and J.B. McDaniel fighting on the floor in the hall by the kitchen. He then saw Corbine, Miller and McDaniel fighting. He said Derrick McDaniel tried to break up the fight by pulling people out of the way. He said he then saw J.B. McDaniel strike the juvenile with the bat.
He said he saw Miller holding a bloody knife two minutes after the McDaniel brothers were stabbed and said he heard Miller state ‘I got that N . . ." The witness stated he did not see a knife in Corbine's hand during the event. He also said he believed that Miller was very intoxicated on vodka, beer and pills (hydrocodone and Xanax).
He said after the fight was over, Miller and Corbine came outside and Corbine was bleeding profusely from the head.

One of two local residents charged in the stabbing death of 23-year-old John B. McDaniel on the LCO reservation on April 22, 2011, pleaded no contest and was found guilty Thursday, Dec. 13 in Sawyer County Court of being party to first-degree reckless homicide in McDaniel's death.
Caleb Miller, 19, of Round Lake School Road also pleaded no contest and was found guilty of being party to aggravated battery-causing great bodily harm to 19-year-old Derrick McDaniel in the same home invasion incident at a residence on Bacon Square.

Under the plea agreement, the state is recommending that the prison time for Miller be capped at 40 years, but the maximum penalty under state law would be 60 years in prison for reckless homicide and 15 years in prison plus a $15,000 fine for aggravated battery.
Judge Gerald Wright ordered a pre-sentence investigation and set sentencing for March 18. A jury trial, which was scheduled to be held in early January on the homicide charges, was canceled.
Judge Wright dismissed related charges against Miller of being party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide of Derrick McDaniel and criminal trespass to a dwelling, and dismissed a charge against Miller of battery to a fellow inmate in the county jail on Aug. 22, 2011. Judge Wright revoked Miller's bond and remanded him to the custody of the sheriff pending sentencing.
Miller appeared in court with his attorney, Chris Gramstrup. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Michael Mahoney.
The other person charged in the April 2011 incident is Marvin "Mackey" Corbine, 22, of Indian Trail Road. Corbine, who also is in custody, faces a jury trial in Bayfield County Feb. 4-13 on charges of first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree intentional homicide, aggravated battery, criminal trespass to a dwelling and bail jumping.

Following a six-day trial, a Bayfield County jury Monday found a 22-year-old Lac Courte Oreilles resident, Marvin Alex "Mackey" Corbine Jr., guilty of party to first-degree reckless homicide in the stabbing death of 23-year-old John B. McDaniel on April 22, 2011 at a home in the Bacon Square community on the LCO reservation.
Corbine, formerly a resident of 9044N Indian Trail Road, also was found guilty of party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the wounding of McDaniel's 19-year-old brother Derrick in the same home invasion incident. Corbine also was found guilty of party to felony aggravated battery, criminal trespass to a dwelling and bail jumping.
The 12-person jury was unanimous in its verdict. The jury deliberated for more than three hours, from 4:08 p.m. to 7:55 p.m. Monday, before announcing its verdict.
Judge John P. Anderson ordered a pre-sentence investigation and remanded Corbine to the custody of the sheriff. The judge scheduled a sentencing hearing for May 8.
Corbine faces a maximum possible penalty of 60 years in prison on both the reckless homicide and attempted first-degree intentional homicide convictions, plus a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $50,000 fine for aggravated battery.
Corbine's trial was moved from Sawyer County to Bayfield County on the grounds of the effect of pre-trial publicity on potential jurors.
Previously, the other person charged in the stabbing incident, Caleb Miller, 19, a resident of Round Lake School Road on the LCO reservation, was found guilty Dec. 13 in Sawyer County Court of being party to first-degree reckless homicide in McDaniel's death.

At a May 8 hearing in Sawyer County Court, 22-year-old Marvin Alex Corbine Jr. was sentenced by Judge John P. Anderson to 63 years in state prison after being convicted of party to first-degree reckless homicide in the stabbing death of 23-year-old John "J.B." McDaniel and party to first-degree attempted intentional homicide in the severe wounding of 19-year-old Derrick McDaniel in a home invasion in the Bacon Square community of the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation on April 22, 2011.
Following a six-day trial which concluded Feb. 11 this year, Corbine was found guilty by a Bayfield County jury of first-degree intentional homicide, party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide, party to aggravated battery, criminal trespass to a dwelling and felony bail jumping.
Corbine, formerly a resident of 9044N Indian Trail Road, was credited with 748 days served in jail. Together with co-defendant Caleb Miller, he is liable for paying more than $110,000 restitution, including funeral expenses for J.B. McDaniel and medical bills for Derrick McDaniel. Corbine is prohibited from any contact with gang members or gang involvement, and from having any contact with the victim's families, or with several men who were involved in the home invasion.
Corbine will not be eligible for release on extended supervision until he is age 83.
Approximately 40 persons attended the May 8 sentencing hearing for Corbine, which was conducted under heavy security.

John B. "JB" McDaniel, 23, of LCO died on Friday, April 22. John Beauford "JB" was born on March 15, 1988 in Hayward the son of Samuel McDaniel and Brenda Beaudin. He graduated from Hayward High School 2007. In high school JB played basketball, football and track and also played hockey when he was younger. JB was a sports fanatic. He loved all sports and had an extensive knowledge of sporting events and statistics. JB worked at the Waterfront Restaurant since 2003. He is survived by his father, Sam McDaniel of Cable; mother, Brenda Beaudin of Hayward; brothers, Nathan and Derrick McDaniel of Hayward; grandmothers, Frances Sawyer of Edenton, N.C, Delores Beaudin of Hayward. JB was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Beauford McDaniel, Steven Beaudin; uncle, John "JB" McDaniel.
Tribal Funeral Rites will be held beginning at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27 at Pineview Funeral Service in Hayward. Paul DeMain will officiate. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Reserve.
Visitation will be held beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 at the funeral home. Casketbearers will be Av Beaudin, Adam Fear, Cody Gustafson, Dan Gustafson, Christopher Kessenich and John Wolters. Pineview Funeral Service in Hayward assisting JB's family with the arrangements.

The Sawyer County Sheriff's Department today identified the person fatally stabbed last Friday during an altercation at a Bacon Square residence on the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation as John B. "J.B." McDaniel, 23, a 2007 graduate of Hayward High School. Chief Deputy Brigette Kornbroke said an autopsy was performed by the Ramsey County medical examiner's office, and that McDaniel's death has been ruled a homicide due to multiple stab wounds.
Kornbroke said that John McDaniel's brother Derrick McDaniel, 19, was critically injured with multiple stab wounds and is currently being treated in a Duluth hospital.
A third individual, a juvenile, was injured during the incident and is also being treated in a Duluth hospital, Kornbroke said.
She said two adults have been arrested in connection with the incident. Caleb Michael Miller, 18, and Marvin Alex Corbine, 20, have been charged with being party to homicide and party to attempted homicide. Corbine was injured during the event; he was treated and released from Hayward Area Memorial Hospital on Friday and was taken into custody Friday afternoon. Both suspects are being held in the Sawyer County Jail on $50,000 cash bonds, Kornbroke said.
Investigators worked through the weekend interviewing numerous individuals and have identified seven persons including Miller and Corbine who went to the McDaniel residence at approximately 4:30 a.m. Friday. Specific details of the incident are not being released to preserve the integrit of the investigadtion, Kornbroke said. Additional charges are being considered and will referred to the district attorney. Two of the persons involved are juveniles and will be referred to Sawyer County Human Services, Kornbroke said.
On Saturday evening, officers recovered instrments that are believed to have been utilized in the crimes. A state crime lab crew assisted with the investigation into the incident at 13273W Bacon Square.
"There are rumors in the community that this was a gang-related incident," Kornbroke said. "The victims in this case have never been identiffied to law enforcement as having any gang affiliations."

Charges of first-degree intentional homicide and party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide were filed this week against two local men by Sawyer County District Attorney Thomas Van Roy in connection with an April 22 altercation and stabbing at a Bacon Square residence on the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation.
Charged are Marvin Alex "Mackey" Corbine Jr., 20, 9044N Indian Trail, Hayward, and Caleb Michael Miller, 18, 12741W Day Care Drive, Hayward. They are jailed on $50,000 cash bonds and are scheduled to make their initial appearances in Sawyer County Circuit Court on Monday, May 23.
Corbine and Miller are charged with homicide in connection with the death of John B. "J.B." McDaniel, 23, and are charged with party to attempted homicide in relation to stab wounds sustained by McDaniel's brother, Derrick McDaniel, 19.
Corbine and Miller also are charged with party to aggravated battery and criminal trespass to a dwelling. Corbine is charged with felony bail jumping.
Early on April 22, Sawyer County sheriff's deputies and Lac Courte Oreilles police responded to the residence on Bacon Square off Round Lake School Road, where an altercation involving numerous individuals was reported to be taking place.

According to reports filed by Sawyer County sheriff's investigators, Sawyer County deputies and LCO police officers, the first officers to arrive at the scene on April 22 saw Derrick McDaniel exit the font door; he was covered with blood. He yelled "Come help my brother."
The officers saw J.B. McDaniel lying on his back in the middle of the living room floor. He also was covered with blood and was wearing only a pair of blue jeans. An officer could not find a pulse on McDaniel and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); he could not get a response.
The officers called for two ambulances. They asked Derrick McDaniel what happened and McDaniel replied he could not remember anything and could not remember who was there. Derrick was observed to have multiple injuries including a puncture wound to his back and large gashes on top of his head and on his face. A tooth was hanging from his mouth.
A person who had been driving around with Miller and Corbine told an investigator that when they arrived at the McDaniel residence, they were looking for a place to stay and party. The house was dark and Miller and Corbine went and knocked on the front door and the witness believes someone let them in.
The witness said he and a juvenile went inside and saw Corbine and J.B. McDaniel fighting on the floor in the hall by the kitchen. He then saw Corbine, Miller and McDaniel fighting. He said Derrick McDaniel tried to break up the fight by pulling people out of the way. He said he then saw J.B. McDaniel strike the juvenile with the bat.
He said he saw Miller holding a bloody knife two minutes after the McDaniel brothers were stabbed and said he heard Miller state ‘I got that N . . ." The witness stated he did not see a knife in Corbine's hand during the event. He also said he believed that Miller was very intoxicated on vodka, beer and pills (hydrocodone and Xanax).
He said after the fight was over, Miller and Corbine came outside and Corbine was bleeding profusely from the head.

One of two local residents charged in the stabbing death of 23-year-old John B. McDaniel on the LCO reservation on April 22, 2011, pleaded no contest and was found guilty Thursday, Dec. 13 in Sawyer County Court of being party to first-degree reckless homicide in McDaniel's death.
Caleb Miller, 19, of Round Lake School Road also pleaded no contest and was found guilty of being party to aggravated battery-causing great bodily harm to 19-year-old Derrick McDaniel in the same home invasion incident at a residence on Bacon Square.

Under the plea agreement, the state is recommending that the prison time for Miller be capped at 40 years, but the maximum penalty under state law would be 60 years in prison for reckless homicide and 15 years in prison plus a $15,000 fine for aggravated battery.
Judge Gerald Wright ordered a pre-sentence investigation and set sentencing for March 18. A jury trial, which was scheduled to be held in early January on the homicide charges, was canceled.
Judge Wright dismissed related charges against Miller of being party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide of Derrick McDaniel and criminal trespass to a dwelling, and dismissed a charge against Miller of battery to a fellow inmate in the county jail on Aug. 22, 2011. Judge Wright revoked Miller's bond and remanded him to the custody of the sheriff pending sentencing.
Miller appeared in court with his attorney, Chris Gramstrup. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Michael Mahoney.
The other person charged in the April 2011 incident is Marvin "Mackey" Corbine, 22, of Indian Trail Road. Corbine, who also is in custody, faces a jury trial in Bayfield County Feb. 4-13 on charges of first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree intentional homicide, aggravated battery, criminal trespass to a dwelling and bail jumping.

Following a six-day trial, a Bayfield County jury Monday found a 22-year-old Lac Courte Oreilles resident, Marvin Alex "Mackey" Corbine Jr., guilty of party to first-degree reckless homicide in the stabbing death of 23-year-old John B. McDaniel on April 22, 2011 at a home in the Bacon Square community on the LCO reservation.
Corbine, formerly a resident of 9044N Indian Trail Road, also was found guilty of party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the wounding of McDaniel's 19-year-old brother Derrick in the same home invasion incident. Corbine also was found guilty of party to felony aggravated battery, criminal trespass to a dwelling and bail jumping.
The 12-person jury was unanimous in its verdict. The jury deliberated for more than three hours, from 4:08 p.m. to 7:55 p.m. Monday, before announcing its verdict.
Judge John P. Anderson ordered a pre-sentence investigation and remanded Corbine to the custody of the sheriff. The judge scheduled a sentencing hearing for May 8.
Corbine faces a maximum possible penalty of 60 years in prison on both the reckless homicide and attempted first-degree intentional homicide convictions, plus a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $50,000 fine for aggravated battery.
Corbine's trial was moved from Sawyer County to Bayfield County on the grounds of the effect of pre-trial publicity on potential jurors.
Previously, the other person charged in the stabbing incident, Caleb Miller, 19, a resident of Round Lake School Road on the LCO reservation, was found guilty Dec. 13 in Sawyer County Court of being party to first-degree reckless homicide in McDaniel's death.

At a May 8 hearing in Sawyer County Court, 22-year-old Marvin Alex Corbine Jr. was sentenced by Judge John P. Anderson to 63 years in state prison after being convicted of party to first-degree reckless homicide in the stabbing death of 23-year-old John "J.B." McDaniel and party to first-degree attempted intentional homicide in the severe wounding of 19-year-old Derrick McDaniel in a home invasion in the Bacon Square community of the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation on April 22, 2011.
Following a six-day trial which concluded Feb. 11 this year, Corbine was found guilty by a Bayfield County jury of first-degree intentional homicide, party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide, party to aggravated battery, criminal trespass to a dwelling and felony bail jumping.
Corbine, formerly a resident of 9044N Indian Trail Road, was credited with 748 days served in jail. Together with co-defendant Caleb Miller, he is liable for paying more than $110,000 restitution, including funeral expenses for J.B. McDaniel and medical bills for Derrick McDaniel. Corbine is prohibited from any contact with gang members or gang involvement, and from having any contact with the victim's families, or with several men who were involved in the home invasion.
Corbine will not be eligible for release on extended supervision until he is age 83.
Approximately 40 persons attended the May 8 sentencing hearing for Corbine, which was conducted under heavy security.

According to the criminal charges, early on April 22, 2011, Sawyer County sheriff's deputies and Lac Courte Oreilles police responded to the residence on Bacon Square off Round Lake School Road, where an altercation involving numerous individuals was reported to be taking place.
John B. McDaniel was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was performed by the Ramsey County, Minn. medical examiner's office, which said McDaniel's death was a homicide due to multiple stab wounds.
Derrick McDaniel was critically injured with multiple stab wounds and was airlifted to a Duluth hospital.
