When Elsie died, leaving Harry with six small children, Harry sent Flossie and Dorsey to live with family as they were of school age. He adopted out Nellie to a couple in which the man is reported to have had a drinking problem. Harry's father retrieved Nellie and took her to Pennsylvania to live with Elsie's mother until her death. Bessie was adopted by her mother's best friend who was unable to have children of her own. Percy was adopted by the Wertz family.
Though he gave full adoptions for each of the children, Harry stayed in contact with each of them through-out his life. They had regular family gatherings in which all of the children attended.
In early 1902 Harry remarried to Alice Carie Hull. They had three children: Marvel, Harry, Delmar, and adopted a fourth child, Theodore. In addition Harry's three oldest children lived with them as well.
Until about 1900, Harry worked on the railroad as an Engineer. His diabetes took one leg about that time, and he became an insurance salesman right up until his death.
He lost his second leg to diabetes in about 1926. He died of angina pectoris (blood clots causing heart attack) brought about by his diabetes.
It is also reported that he had two farms. One in Iowa, and one in Kansas.
He is much loved, and greatly missed.
