US Congressman. Born on a farm near New Lexington, Ohio, he attended Franklin College and during the Civil War, served as a Private in Company H, 126th Regiment, Ohio Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he moved to Kansas, in 1868, engaged in agricultural pursuits and taught school in Newton, Kansas. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1875 and commenced the practice of law in Marysville, Kansas, in 1879. He served as prosecuting attorney of Marshall County, (1889-91). In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1911. An unsuccessful candidate for renomination, he resumed his legal practice in Marysville, Kansas, until he retired in 1920. He relocated to Enid, Oklahoma, where he lived until his death at age 84.
