He joined the Western Dominican Province in 1920, when the Friars had the Novitiate with the Province of St. Joseph in Somerset, Ohio. He was already 52 when he was called to religious life. In Ohio, Br. John was the community's mailman and took care of Fr. Leo Adams, a member of the Third Order, today known as the Dominican Laity. After two years there, he joined the Dominican Community at Ross, California. Following his years of formation he went to serve the community in Portland, Oregon his hometown. He served them from 1926 till 1929, and then he went for a short stay to Benicia and two years to the new House of Studies in Oakland. He returned to Portland where he served for three more years dying at the age of 67.
