Her father was dead set against her getting married, wanting her to remain to help her mother. Mary's youngest brother was just one year old, but on Oct. 30, 1889 Mary married Patrick Joseph McGill.
They had nine children - eight living to adulthood.
Her eldest C. Arthur was very close to his mother. When all the younger children had been put to bed she would talk about all her troubles with him while he brushed her long hair which hung below her waist. Mary fretted when the family moved to Pittsfield since she owed the Hinsdale store $41. But that grocer moved as well and to his surprise Mary was able to pay off her debt.
