U.S. Congressman. He attended the College of William and Mary Virginia and served as a Private in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1815 and commenced to practice law in Morgantown, Virginia. He was president of the Marion County Court in 1842 and was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Alexander Newman, serving (1849-51). He also was a Brigadier General of the Virginia State Militia and served as a Colonel in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
